Michael Vick's Redemption

Today marks the beginning of Michael Vick's new career. NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell has
given him a "Conditional release" back into the NFL. This means he is able to sign with an NFL
team today. The terms of this also means he will be allowed to participate in training camp and
be allowed to play in the final 2 preseason games this year. However, he will have to apply for
full reinstatement after week 1 of the regular season and the Commissioner has up to 6 weeks
to decide if he deems Vick is ready for reinstatement. Vick now embarks on a new struggle in
which he faces 2 serious road blocks, 1) getting a team to sign him and 2) the court of public
opinion. Make no mistake about it, Vick had to pay for the things that he did to those dogs. And
he has made some egregious mistakes in life, even besides the dog fighting charges that he
has to make atonement's for. But personally, I will not prosecute him any further, in my belief; he
definitely deserves a second chance to earn a living just like everybody else. It is now up to
owners who are willing to take a chance on a guy whose presence that can not only cause
problems in the community, but could also hurt economically if fans decide to boycott the venue
itself. In a world that gives second chances too many people who have done incredibly worse
things, let's hold judgment against Michael Vick and give him a second chance. People have
actually learned from their mistakes.
Tragic Loss

In another senseless killing, Boxer Vernon Forrest was killed Sunday morning in Atlanta when
3 carjackers tried to take his car. They took his wallet and ran off and Vernon, being a guy
who as a boxer does not take stuff off nobody, went chasing after him. He was shot and killed
while he was returning to his car. Vernon Forrest was a 3 time boxing champion in the ring.
But that is not where the real story is. He created and established Destiny's Child Inc. (D.C.I.),
a group home that provides housing and assistance to mentally challenged adults. The home
provides 24-hour supervision by trained mental health professionals. He also won the Boxers
Good Guy Award for his help in the community. He was training for a fight in September when
this tragic event happened. Too often Black men are criticized for all of the things that they do
to the detriment of society, when we really don't recognize the good things that they do. We
have lost a good man, a good BLACK MAN, who has exhibited not only a stellar career inside
the ring, but outside of it as well.
Season of Hope

The Atlanta Falcons start there 2009 training camp today as favorites to win the NFC South
division because of the miraculous 2008 campaign in which the team shocked the league with
an 11-5 record and a berth in the NFL Playoffs. This Falcon team will try to accomplish
something that no other Falcon team has done in their history: have back-to-back winning
seasons.  For some, this may not seem like a big deal, but if you have been in the ATL for the
past 45 years, I promise you this IS A BIG DEAL! However, for all of the excitement there might
be this season, this team still has two major flaws. 1) While they did spend a lot of time adding
defensive pieces to this team during the draft and free agency, the defense is extremely young
and it will be a learning process for our beloved "Dirty Birds" as they were at the bottom half of
the league in defense and 2) The schedule which was favorable to them last year will be a lot
tougher as they will face 12 teams with 500 or better winning percentages. However, the good
news is that they return one of the most potent and effective offensive attacks in the NFL with
“Rookie of the year" Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and the addition of future "Hall of Famer",
Tony Gonzalez.  While it is hard to say for sure what this season will truly bring, here's hoping
that this version of the Atlanta Falcons bring the fans what we love see: skillful, aggressive, do
or die football. In layman terms, WINNING FOOTBALL!!

The Walking Contradiction

He's Baaack............Again!
Brett Favre has decided to joined the Minnesota Vikings team after months of teasing the
Vikings organization with his "will he or won't he" soap opera he enjoys putting the media
through. His "aw shucks" manner may sway you to believe that he doesn't enjoy the attention
he is getting, but you would be crazy not to think so. He is doing himself and the team a
disservice for coming back at this late date in the preseason!  If the guy didn't want to go
through the wars of training camp, then he should have had the balls to just be honest with the
Vikings and tell them so!   Instead, he waits until 3 weeks after camp has ended to return to the
team, supposedly after a "by chance phone call" from Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress
encouraging him to return.  Not surprisingly, the team decides to start a preseason game just 2
days after he officially joins the team!
Lets not get it twisted, the Minnesota Vikings are as much to blame in this farce as he is! The
Vikings and Brad Childress have allowed this guy to hold them prisoner as he kept putting
them on and off during this Dramedy (Get it, Drama and Comedy mixed together, but I
digress). They have to be held accountable for the welfare of this football team and make sure
this circus that Favre has brought to town doesn't ruin the season. In the end, this is Brett
Favre's decision and his alone. While I do not believe this will affect his Hall of Fame career
status in most people’s eyes, I myself have to wonder whether the decisions of the past couple
of years have tarnished the greatness of his legacy. What do you think?
